From “32 Short Lucubrations Concerning Alan Moore on the Occasion of His 50th Birthday: A Semiotic Diversion” by John Coulthart, in Alan Moore: Portrait of an Extraordinary Gentleman:

Heading up Parsonage Road, two pissheads pass us by on the opposite side of the street. Pisshead one looks across and states loudly, with some manace, “Life is short.” Without missing a beat, and looking directly ahead, Alan [Moore] proclaims, “Yes, but art is long.” We continue our journey unimpeded, protected by the power of ancient aphorisms.
