This is just getting bizarre:

President Obama “whispered to a top fundraiser this week that he believes GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney wants to name Gen. David Petraeus to the VP slot,” according to the Drudge Report.

“A Petraeus drama has been quietly building behind the scenes. Romney is believed to have secretly met with the four-star general in New Hampshire.”

Given that Drudge has carried water throughout the process for Romney, and that his campaign has been milking the VP selection process until the teats run dry, it’s easy to guess where this “insider Obama account” comes from. Another sign is, it is equally ridiculous to the Condi Rice rumors. If Petraeus doesn’t want to be president, why would he want to be vice president? Obama mostly did what Petraeus wanted done on foreign policy, and the latter accepted a political appointment as CIA Director. If he couldn’t stand Obama as much as Romney claimed to, he would certainly have resigned in disgust after the Green movement flamed out in Iran, or what have you. Petraeus does seem to have some political sophistication, and he has to know that he’d only be on the ticket to validate Romney’s ridiculous hash of foreign policy ideas, and to burnish with his own professional experience what Romney refuses to take seriously. He’d have to be not only power-crazy but a total idiot to do it, and he won’t.

But this is par for the course for Romney’s campaign, which has for weeks acted as though the country is held in suspense with who his running mate is going to be. It’s getting to the point where even Romney backers ought to start wondering if this guy just lacks any new moves to make.
