Here’s something I’ve been wondering. Why hasn’t there been any push–at least none that I’ve detected–for a new federal bill setting guidelines for voter rights in the face of all these new voter restrictions? Admittedly, House Republicans would probably not let it through at this time, but that doesn’t mean the subject can’t be raised. I mean, sure, it’s partisan in the sense that it would help one party more than the other, but being as voting restrictions are doing the same thing only by taking away peoples’ rights, I don’t see the problem. And it’s not really an ideological thing, the right to vote–I suspect the vast majority of people don’t know it’s happening, and I don’t really think top Republicans would be in a position to support disenfranchisement if it were made an issue.

Actually, a new federal voting bill would be a pretty good political move I think. The minorities targeted by these measures would know that the Dems have their backs, same for younger and elderly voters that might not have the ID they need in order to vote. Wouldn’t cost much, it would be politically (but not ideologically) motivated, but basically I think for the right reasons. The best I can come up with is that hardly any of this stuff was going on in 2009-10 when Democrats might have had the ability to do something about it, and they’ve been focused on the economy since then. Which might well be the right set of priorities, but I don’t see the downside in putting the idea out there and drawing more attention to it.
