It’s really amazing what’s available on YouTube anymore. So many full albums. Here’s one of my all-time favorites:

Power, Corruption and Lies (title taken from Orwell’s 1984) was the second album from New Order, which features that ubiquitous hit ”Blue Monday”. Their first album, Movement, was something of a disappointment, they clung too much to Joy Division concepts just a bit too closely. But they moved on quickly after that. PCL is, in a word, dazzling. It encompasses many moods, from sunny and romantic to darker and introspective. I especially like the use of synthesizers in the music–the natural assumption is that synths are cheesy and bad, but really this is because most ’80s music didn’t use them very well (including many of the bands that copied New Order, and there were many). But on this album, they complement and heighten the rest of the music. New Order sometimes gets flack for their lyrics, though they were sometimes quite good, but typically the lyrics exist to provide a frame of reference more than anything else, it’s the music that speaks, ultimately. And the music here is deep and textured indeed.

Yeah, yeah, this is getting pretentious fast, so I’ll stop. But this one holds up great, and I come back to it quite often.
