I’ve been saying it for years: the countless billions of dollars rushing into “social media” companies is largely a farce and a bubble that is destined to burst.  Someone still needs to tell me why Joe’s Plumbing Supply includes a Facebook and Twitter icon at the end of their commercials.

I was thinking of posting on this. I know that all the features of Facebook are there so that they can custom-tailor ads to me, but what if I never click on ads? I can’t remember ever doing it.

same here. there are probably all sorts of rubes out there who click on all those misleading “Do you like Jesus? Vote Now!” ads. so I get it that their revenue is probably around 3.7 billion with a profit of around $1 billion. that’s a substantial business with real value. however, a lot of that value is what i’m talking about -- lots of companies each pouring tens of millions of dollars into “social media” marketing strategies and ad buys at what are in my estimation grossly inflated prices -- all because everyone is fapping to the super hot sexy cool thing that is social media (extreme!). remember the last time billions of dollars in capital hungrily flowed into an overinflated new hot sexy wicked cool awesome technology? yeah, the rampant dot-com boondoggle. how did that work out?
