The NY Times, today:

Representative Bob Turner, a Republican who unexpectedly won a House seat in a closely watched special election last year, has decided to run for the United States Senate in New York, seeking to oust Kirsten E. Gillibrand, a Democrat.

Mr. Turner came to the decision after it became clear that his Congressional district, which includes portions of Queens and Brooklyn, was one of two that would most likely be eliminated this year in New York as part of the decennial redistricting process. New York must cut the size of its Congressional delegation to 27 from 29 to reflect slow population growth identified in the 2010 census. […]

In particular, the Republicans note that Mr. Turner, a retired television executive, managed to win election to Congress despite the fact that Democrats had spent hundreds of thousands of dollars against him and mobilized legions of supporters. And Mr. Turner successfully courted some Democratic voters who were dismayed with the state of the economy under President Obama, or who objected to the president’s handling of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

He doesn’t waste any time, does he? Just one day after a new redistricting map was circulated among pols (but not released to the public), Turner decides it’s time to move on. His district must have just been completely taken apart. So, really, a long-shot Senate bid was probably the only chance he could stay in Washington, and especially in a presidential election year it’s not a very good chance. In fact, my guess is that Gillibrand will eat him for lunch. This is good news, because in case we’ve forgotten, this is the guy we’re talking about:

In anticipation of this somber day [the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks], the New York GOP sent out “a kitchen-sink mailer in the hotly-contested Queens congressional special election depicting a mosque superimposed over the scarred Ground Zero site on one side, and Democrat David Weprin alongside President Barack Obama on the other.”

The incendiary flier was sent out on behalf of Republican businessman Bob Turner who is seeking to take former Rep. Anthony Weiner’s (D) seat…. [T]he front of the flier features a gold-domed mosque rising out of the ruins of the World Trade Center site with a quote from Weprin stating “I support the right of the mosque to build.” The other side places Weprin next to Obama and reads “Weprin stands with Obama — and they stand together in support of the mosque at Ground Zero.”

It’s great news to get a Muslimbaiter out of Congress. My only wish is that this dickwad had thrown his hat into the ring too.
