I was going to do a whole thing about it, but I really think there’s no point. It will never become law. Moderate Senate Republicans will never go for it–do you really see Scott Brown and Olympia Snowe running for brand new terms on axing Medicare and Medicaid?–and I highly doubt it would even get 35 votes in favor in the Senate. Potentially far less if the rank-and-file turn on it, as they did on Bush’s Social Security plan. The merits of the plan aside (Benen is useful as always here), I see no reason to get worked up over something that will unite Democrats and put Republicans on the unquestionably wrong end of public opinion. Indeed, I thank Paul Ryan for his considerateness in providing Democrats with such a great issue.

I hope you’re right, Lev. The Washington media establishment though is the one wild card here and they’ve already concluded that Ryan is a “very serious person” despite all of the very serious flaws pointed out in his last big debut, the 2010 road map. I think much of the media is already conditioned to see the Democrats’ objections as irresponsible partisanship and it will crown Ryan with the laurel of bravely thinking out of the box. Maybe I’m being too cynical though on this third rail issue…

I guess we’ll see, Rupert. I seem to recall the media being hot for Bush’s Social Security plan, and we all know how that turned out.

Yes, but in a weird way Dems seemed better at messaging back when Bush was president. Look at what they’re doing now: http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/2011/04/truly_pathetic_1.php?ref=fpblg

    Grrrr.

  4. All I have to say is that the Democrats are dead to me if they aren’t able to massively capitalize on the finally-announced OFFICIAL republican plan to COMPLETELY ELIMINATE MEDICARE FOR THOSE UNDER 55 and replace it with a voucher system that PUTS 100% OF THE RISK OF SPIRALING HEALTH CARE COSTS ON RETIREES.

i really don’t see how you could have a better campaign message than that.
