Newt Gingrich said that his patriotism led him to commit affairs. What a tool. He’ll never be president.

(Editorial Note: When I was coming up with tags for this post, I figured the “Newt Gingrich” and “Stupidity” tags were the natural choices. But after thinking about it for a moment, I wondered if a single “Newt Gingrich Stupidity” tag might not be better. It’s not like he generates much else these days. Since he looks likely to run for president, this consolidation will save numerous keystrokes over the next year and a half. Also, 100% of Newt Gingrich-tagged posts here at Library Grape also include the “Stupidity” or “Bullshit” tags, so clearly there’s justification for something like this. So, I am introducing this new tag specifically for him. May it get much use this electoral season!)

Oh my dear lordy: “There’s no question at times of my life, partially driven by how passionately I felt about this country, that I worked far too hard and things happened in my life that were not appropriate.”

I seriously think that line is one of the most pernicious perversions of patriotism pandering i’ve ever read.

I love the fact that he in on marriage 5, if I remember correctly, and still is the spokesman for family values??? If he can’t keep a marriage vow how can he keep any other value. Not counting the fact that he was leading the charge against Clinton while conducting his own infidelity while his wife was fighting cancer really takes the cake.

I always thought Newt was ‘running’ to sell books, get speaking engagements, and gain influence

Yeah, me too. But it looks real this time. Which I say is a good thing--I’m hoping for a Guiliani-style reputation destroyer of a campaign. Why he still has any reputation in some quarters is, well, a mystery to me.
