I can't say that surprises me in the least. People want to see the change they voted for.

  2. Metavirus says:

I'm not very surprised either. The economy being what it is and all.

Obama has been a disappointment either because of his inability to achieve the Change we wanted to believe in or my expectations for change was unrealistic given the amount of problems this country was facing and still is facing as a result of 8 years of Republican rule. I suspect the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

another thought came to mind. so many people think that "independents" just naturally love "centrism" and "bipartisanship". i'm not so sure. sure, some of them may genuinely pay homage to those useless bromides but I suspect most of them would prefer a firm, aggressive pursuit of the policy agenda they favor (e.g., health care reform).

nobody likes milquetoast. your fans will say the toast is too soggy while your enemies will claim the toast was so overcooked that it scraped their palette raw.

Well this just screams of projection, missing the mark in several respects.

The firm pursuit of health care reform did not do Obama any favors among independents.

Independents are quite keen on centrism--it's the whole point of being independent, we don't want either party to "aggressively pursue" its agenda. In fact we're most comfortable with divided government--it's why things tend to swing towards the opposition party during midterms.

I can't remember the exact stats offhand, but most presidents in the last century have lost house seats during their first term.

      • Metavirus says:

um, i would be careful about wrapping independents in the same cloak you choose to wear.

let's take health care for example. obama campaigned on universal coverage, with a strong public option. independents heard this, as well as other campaign pitches and came away with a a decision to vote for him. you assume too much when you say that health care reform didn't do Obama any favors. you fail to ask "WHY?". my assertion that the fact that health care reform was overly watered down and therefore drove away independents is just as plausible as your assumed claim that passing any kind of health care reform hurt him among independents (p.s., why exactly would that be the case? because independents love the same kind of deficit peacockery as the tea partiers?).

i really find the concept of centrism to be garbage (i.e., take two points of view, split it down the middle and VOILA!). it's mushy, milquetoast bologna and independents -- in my opinion -- are very adept at spotting milquetoast bologna.
