It’s amazing to me that Mitt Romney brings up France as a scary comparison point to himself so often when he spent years there and speaks the language. It’s such a minor point, but telling. wow, that black lady in the crowd sounded MIGHTY defensive.
and you have to love this bit by mr. random white dude: "if you're a good muslim, you'll kill christians"
there are some scary folks in this country. growing crazier by the day.
Nice piece. I think if you got a drink in a lot of those folks the unclear, unmentioned 'thing' they want to restore/take back is simply having a white president that they can worship again. Decades from now people will look back at these various Beck rallies and wonder what the hell these people were so exercised about and it will be hard to conclude it was not largely ethnic politics that was at least the gateway to accepting all the other paranoid delusions of Glenn Beck (and of course the religiosity of this crowd makes them easy prey to Beck's fantasies).
that's the thing about all of this that really chaps my hide: the "thing" people are all so bent out of shape about. the reactionary right is completely immersed in a viscous soup of code words, con artists, dog whistles and magical thinking. it's gotten so bad that well-meaning people who try to figure out what they're saying -- on the face of it -- just come away with an earful of word garbage. people need to develop better inductive reasoning skills, and not take things at face value.
simple question: what do you think the tea partiers/Beck worshippers hate more: taxes or Barack Obama? … Yup and 'Nuff said.
these people are the same people who got all stirred up in the confederate south by fears of black men ravishing pure white women. these are the same people who got ginned up by the GOP's 40-year southern strategy to make white people feel victimized at the hands of the minorities. these are the people who are now running around crying that christians are being PERSECUTED and that there is a WAR ON CHRISTMAS! always victimized, always paranoid, always driven by fear and hatred of The Other. and today, these are the people who express thinly veiled "fears" and "concerns" about a black President who is a "socialist", "marxist", "Nazi" — all because they can't say Nigger anymore.
Yep, Hitch wrote a great piece today on Slate about all of this. Money quote: ""It's not unfair to say that such grievances are purely and simply imaginary, which in turn leads one to ask what the real ones can be. The clue, surely, is furnished by the remainder of the speeches, which deny racial feeling so monotonously and vehemently as to draw attention."
and these same people cannot bring themselves to blame the Rep who lead us to this disaster. When I talk to them, and ask them who bailed out the banks without holding the bank corporate structure accountable they all say Obama. . not one remembers that it was G.W. Bush. To them the world has ended because a black man won the election.
