Fareed Zakaria, one of the only non-retarded people working at CNN today:

Have we all gone crazy?  I don’t mean you, I mean us, the media.  …   This whole discussion is a terrible example of how the media can trivialize political discussion. The presidency is a serious job, the most serious job in the country. And here we are, asking the man to dress the part, to play-act the emotions. Give us satisfaction by just doing something, even if it’s all phony stuff, designed to give the impression of action.

 Right on!

"A hideous ecstasy of fear and vindictiveness, a desire to kill, to torture, to smash faces in with a sledge hammer, seemed to flow through the whole group of people like an electric current, turning one even against one's will into a grimacing, screaming lunatic. And yet the rage that one felt was an abstract, undirected emotion which could be switched from one object to another like the flame of a blowlamp." -- George Orwell, 1984

I don't know. Why couldn't the "something" Obama does involve simply firing Ken Salazar and making it clear that his administration does not tolerate incompetence? I personally don't care whether he gets angry like the media seems to want, but it would be nice if he demonstrated some real leadership.

Fair point, although all the media screeching is for the type ofBush-like public photos opps and preening. And, maddingly, for thefederal government to stop the spill. The types of things that obamaCAN do are generally strategic and long-term (reforming MMS, studyingnew safety measures to impose on drillers, etc). Pretty much the onlyuseful short term thing to be done is a moratorium, which he imposed.I really wonder if future historians will look to the fall of theamerican empire and blame the media. Signs point to very likely.

What should Ken Salazar have done differently?

    • Metavirus says:

It is clear that Ken Salazar has not done enough to reform MMS. To befair, I don't what what he has been doing or if it could have beenaccomplished in a year. Which is why I am not yet calling for hishead. But its obvious that stricter oversight of deepsea drillingneeds to be put in place, and that's within his remit as head of theDept of the Interior. Mandatory relief wells would be a great start.
