I’ve been toying around with the concept of a “political sociopath” lately. It basically describes a politician entirely consumed with their political success to the point where they fail to take into consideration the suffering of the people that would be affected by their actions. Common traits of a standard sociopath include:

  • Glibness and Superficial Charm

  • Manipulative and Conning - They never recognize the rights of others and see their self-serving behaviors as permissible. They appear to be charming, yet are covertly hostile and domineering, seeing their victim as merely an instrument to be used. They may dominate and humiliate their victims.
  • Grandiose Sense of Self - Feels entitled to certain things as “their right.”
  • Pathological Lying - Has no problem lying coolly and easily and it is almost impossible for them to be truthful on a consistent basis. Can create, and get caught up in, a complex belief about their own powers and abilities. Extremely convincing and even able to pass lie detector tests.
  • Lack of Remorse, Shame or Guilt - A deep seated rage, which is split off and repressed, is at their core. Does not see others around them as people, but only as targets and opportunities. Instead of friends, they have victims and accomplices who end up as victims. The end always justifies the means and they let nothing stand in their way.
  • Callousness/Lack of Empathy - Unable to empathize with the pain of their victims, having only contempt for others’ feelings of distress and readily taking advantage of them.
  • Irresponsibility/Unreliability - Not concerned about wrecking others’ lives and dreams. Oblivious or indifferent to the devastation they cause. Does not accept blame themselves, but blames others, even for acts they obviously committed.
Sound familiar? Sound like the traits of a politician who would call for President Obama to declare war on Iraq Iran in order to help his political chances? Here’s the Queen of the Political Sociopaths on just that topic:
President Barack Obama won’t be re-elected in 2012 unless he can “toughen up” on national security, according to Sarah Palin. The former Governor of Alaska believes that declaring war on Iran could help the president get re-elected.

“Say he decided to declare war on Iran or decided really to come out and do whatever he could to support Israel, which I would like him to do,” Palin told Fox News’ Chris Wallace Sunday. “That changes the dynamics in what we can assume is going to happen between now and three years.”

sociopath's by definition can't understand the problems that they cause, and in you example she has a God given mission to preform, what ever that is. And the concept is scarier than Bush's was.

I've been exploring this phenomenon myself, and few things in life have been so illuminating. Please see my blogs on this, starting with "Criminals rule."
