Some interesting thoughts from John Cole:

Interesting analysis by Democracy Corps about what motivates the conservative fringe which included this paragraph:

A central part of the collective identity built by conservative Republicans in the current political environment is their belief that they possess knowledge and insight that the majority of Americans – whether too lazy or too misguided to find it for themselves – do not possess. A combination of conservative media outlets are the means by which they have gained this knowledge, led by FOX News (“the truth tellers“), and to a lesser degree conservative talk radio. Their antipathy and distrust toward the mainstream media could not be stronger, and they fiercely defend FOX as the only truly objective news outlet.

This goes along with what DougJ has been talking about for months- that these folks really are speaking their own language, and have a complete different language, reality, and collective understanding. It really is to the point that the echo chamber is reverberating so loudly that when you hear these guys speak, it almost seems like they are from a different planet.

Only they know the real truth. The rest of us are just sheeples.

Doesn’t this kind of blind, unthinking faith and persecution complex remind you of evangelical Christianism?

Righteous positions absent evidence, or even in the face of evidence to the contrary, are irrational, funny or silly at best; and manipulative or destructive at worst. FOX Nuz and devout followers function toward the later end of this spectrum. Salon has a good interview with Richard Dawkins, excerpt:

"You also describe an encounter with Wendy Wright, from Concerned Women of America, in the book. She repeatedly refuses to listen to your arguments and not only that but your evidence. Do you think the debate about creationism is just a question of people not being willing to look at very obvious evidence?" (answer below)

    (Answer:)
"I think that's very clear in the case of the interview with Wendy Wright that she had a kind of willful refusal to listen. She absolutely knew what she believed. She's believed it since childhood. She believes it, because it's in the holy book. Nothing that you could say to her would ever change her mind. That kind of mind is not open to evidence. It is a complete waste of time arguing with people like her. Fortunately there are plenty of other people with whom it's not a waste of time arguing, who simply don't know very much about it, and why should they? There are lots of things we don't know much about, and so I have great hopes — not of convincing people like her, who are forever close-minded — but of convincing people who just haven't given it very much thought."

The reason that we must continue to argue with them is that they are so numerous and seem to continue to gain followers. I do not even have to look to a prominent author only to my daughter-in-law to find one sided arguments, bigotry, and religious intolerance that rivals the Taliban.

They have seen the God given way and anyone who disagrees with them, or their messengers, are heretics and heathens, Sounds very similar to the terrorists, doesn't it.
