I’ve noticed that the issue of all that pesky torture we did over the last 6+ years has been pretty quiet as of late. I just wanted to re-post something I put up a while back to emphasize what kind of a strange bizzaro world we’re living in right now.

Add this to the vast library of rank hypocrisy to greet us from the right. Go back in the way-back machine and remember the days of Abu Ghraib. Here was Bush speaking in an interview on al-Arabiya after the horrors were revealed:

It’s important for people to understand that in a democracy, there will be a full investigation. In other words, we want to know the truth. In our country, when there’s an allegation of abuse … there will be a full investigation, and justice will be delivered. … It’s very important for people and your listeners to understand that in our country, when an issue is brought to our attention on this magnitude, we act. And we act in a way in which leaders are willing to discuss it with the media. … In other words, people want to know the truth. That stands in contrast to dictatorships. A dictator wouldn’t be answering questions about this. A dictator wouldn’t be saying that the system will be investigated and the world will see the results of the investigation.

A few more words from Steve Benen:

“Full investigation.” We want to know “the truth.” We believe in “justice.” “We act” in response to allegations of torture. We’re transparent and discuss developments “with the media.” To fail to answer questions is to act like a “dictatorship.”

It seems to me if Democrats are looking for an excuse to do the right thing, they don’t have to say much more than, “We’re doing what Bush told us to do.”

  1. JSYK says:

Take that Cheney, your former boss is telling the democrats what to do, the people want transparency, the world will see that Americans will investigate these bad apples!!!!!! Go for it!

  2. Peggy Chun says:

I absolutely agree with this and do not believe this is a dead issue. I look forward to the results of the systematic investigations currently taking place by the AG and Congressional Committee investigating this horrendous mess. Because this is filled with such explosive national and international legal issues, I can understand and respect a methodical thorough preparation before going public with it all. Obama has repeatedly stated that, unlike other talk-first-think/facts-later types, he prefers to know exactly what he's talking about before he speaks. And on something so enormously important, this is the right and proper course.

  3. schu says:

But in investigating Abu Ghraib the Republicans were able to use a few low level troops as scapegoats, and not investigate the Military Intelligence, CIA operatives, or commanding officers. Everyone but the sacrifices received the old white wash. When Obama pardoned the underlings it made scapegoating impossible, and we know have to concentrate on the political leaders who authorized the projects. No wonder Cheney is screaming.
