You know you want it. (Economist interview)

    not gon' read it! :)

  2. schu says:

Who is Megan and why would I care?

    • Metavirus says:

She is Gherald's BFF who opines on opposing most forms of health carereform. He's a bit obsessed

      • Gherald says:

Not really, but LG likes to joke about it.

[For instance, my year-old blog has 73 posts tagged yglesias and 57 as mcardle. Eat facts. =P]

Anyhow, I think the interview is more interesting than anything I have to say. So if you're willing to read me, you ought to read it =P

        • Metavirus says:

yes, i admit, your obsession is relatively recent

          • Gherald says:

We're away from the election, so I've been talking about economics more than electoral politics…you really only think I'm obsessed because I happen to agree with her on health care and that's been a big topic these months. (her proposals, btw, are helpfully summarized in the above interview)

      • schu says:

What are her credits? Or is she another like Glenn Beck? But perhaps she is saner.

  3. Metavirus says:

Oh, you know I tease :)

  4. Metavirus says:

She is saner thank Beck (what a low standard! :).  She's a pundit who writes from a strident libertarian bent

    • schu says:

But what are her credentials? As far as I can see she runs a blog, reports on things, and arrives at these strange decisions. Does she have a degree, although I will be the first to agree that a degree is not always required, or do these things just pop into her head. Has she seriously studied these maters, or just reported on the things that she likes and agrees on?

  5. Metavirus says:

As I understand it, she has an MBA (which, by the way, really doesn't give you any qualification in economics or public policy) and used to write for some financial publications.  Her fiance is something of a libertarian notable, who worked for the organization FreedomWorks and also writes strident libertarian stuff.

  6. Gherald says:

I don't understand the left's obsession with Megan's credentials, which I commented on three weeks ago

    LG later wrote:

On the dilletante side of things, I don't have any problem reading
average folks with interesting thoughts who don't hold themselves out
as experts in any sense of the word (eg you and me). I get suspicious
when people without the training to call themselves an expert in a
field do so (and, no, in my mind, an MBA is not sufficient training to
be considered an expert in economics).

    My response was:

You're going to have to point me to an example of Megan calling herself an expert on something she isn't. In the year or so that I've been reading her blog, she's been quite up-front about her academic qualifications whenever it's relevant, which it rarely is.

Since when do we expect successful bloggers to be scholars? Do you read Andrew because he has a PhD in government, or because he's a popular blogger with many interesting things to say? Is Ezra Klein's health wonkery less relevant because he only has a BA in political science? Are you concerned that Matt Yglesias has only majored in philosophy?

What's so special about economics? Why can't someone who comes from a related field--Wall Street finance and journalism, in Megan's case--have informed things to say about economics and associated policy matters? And how can you even begin to justify the claim that she "knows nothing of economics or political economy, beyond that minimum of jargon needed…" ?

I can understand disagreeing with someone who's views and analysis you don't like. But pretending someone with Megan's considerable knowledge & understanding never knows what she's talking about is absurd.

Perhaps you should read Megan taking down someone who genuinely "knows nothing of economics or political economy, beyond that minimum of jargon needed" for a better feel of what that's really like.

To which he replied: "Back to the grind, back later."

And now the lazy bastard's in Hawaii! Figures. =P

  7. schu says:

If I want to look at and understand some of her views, then I would want to know how she has arrived at her views and what she has done to establish her credentials. Other wise I might as well listen and look at all the opinionated airheads on AOL. I really don’t care if she has a PhD, or is a scholar, if I take the time to examine her views it would be nice to know how she has arrived at them. Unlike the point I think LC was driving for I do not think that she needs a degree to argue a point.
