Back on for a second to agree with John Cole that this passage from a recent Douthat column is pretty damn correct:

If the Congressional Democrats can’t get a health care package through, it won’t prove that President Obama is a sellout or an incompetent. It will prove that Congress’s liberal leaders are lousy tacticians, and that its centrist deal-makers are deal-makers first, poll watchers second and loyal Democrats a distant third. And it will prove that the Democratic Party is institutionally incapable of delivering on its most significant promises.

You have to assume that on some level Congress understands this — which is why you also have to assume that some kind of legislation will eventually pass.

If it doesn’t, President Obama will have been defeated. But it’s the party, not the president, that will have failed.

Health care reform is a test case on to ability of the Democrats in Congress to marshal their forces and pass their agenda. Say what you will about the Republicans; their ability to both come together and bludgeon some on the other side into coming along was pretty impressive — especially as compared to the fecklessness of Harry Reid.

I was going to suggest that the sooner Democrats come to terms with the Senate not having 60 votes for a public plan, the better off they and their final product will be. Important reform issues have been sidelined due to our collective obsession with this one hot button issue.

However, I've been watching intrade and in recent days the odds have climbed from 15% to 44.5%.

Seems the market is taking the progressive threat of "no reform without the public option" very seriously. It's surprising to me, given the logic Ezra explains here.

I am really surprised that you expect to see a logical politician. Politics is the art of making a deal. However I really think that a few democrats think that they can slide on this deal take the lobbyists money and then take their lumps in the next election.

That's the part that's weird. Passing health care reform is in their+immediate short term political interest+, which they are slaves toevery moment of every day, so I just don't get why they are constantlyshooting themselves in the feet

Not being in lock step with each other Democrats have to argue each and every point to arrive at a meeting point. In reality the Democratic Party is really a collation of very diverse points of view. It is both a blessing and a curse.
