1. She’s facing a serious legal scandal and wants to spend her time crafting a defense. Seeing how she operated in Alaska makes this a likely choice.

  2. She wants to milk her current fame to garner millions by plugging her book next year and setting out full-time on the lucrative Republican lecture circuit. This is also a very tantalizing choice.
  3. She’s flat-out delusional and, ignoring all sane advice to the contrary, thinks that this move will actually help her rather than hurt her politically. Seeing how she handled the potential VP thing, this is also highly probable.
Update: schu makes an excellent point in the comments:
Can we use our imagination for a minute to see what would happen if the Republican Party had won.

“John, Sarah here. I can’t take it any more! All the investigations into my e-mails and ethic’s are driving me craze! I am not a politics as usual type of gal, and did not sign on to be investigated like this! I Quite!”

Then, assuming that in our little fantasy the Democrats still carried the majority in the house the speaker would become the VP. Just like when Agnew had to resign under Nixon, It would be the first in modern political history that the VP and President were not of the same party.
