What is it with conservative evangelical Republican hypocrites having all sorts of sinful extramarital dalliances with their staffers?
Republican Sen. John Ensign of Nevada is admitting he had an extramarital affair with a member of his campaign staff. Ensign told The Associated Press in a statement, “I deeply regret and am very sorry for my actions.”An aide in Ensign’s office said the affair took place between December 2007 and August 2008, with a campaign staffer who was married to an employee in Ensign’s Senate office. Neither have worked for the senator since May 2008. The aide spoke on condition of anonymity.
The aide declined to comment on Ensign’s political future.
The extent of the sexual hangups plaguing repressed Republican lawmakers is truly frightening. Is anyone even bothering to keep score anymore? Off the top of my head I can name David Vitter, Newt Gingrich, Rudy Giuliani, John McCain, Larry Craig and Bob Barr. Sigh…
Update: Think Progress plumbs the depths of Ensign’s rank hypocrisy:
Since his election to the Senate in 2000, Ensign has been a leading conservative voice who demanded the resignation of former Idaho Sen. Larry Craig in September 2007. Ensign called Craig a “disgrace” after he was arrested in June 2007 in an airport men’s restroom on disorderly conduct charges. But when Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) acknowledged having an affair, Ensign he didn’t call on him to resign.
Ensign has also been an ardent opponent of gay marriage. In Feb. 2004, Ensign announced his support for an amendment to the Constitution that would have defined marriage as a union between a man and a woman. Ensign said the amendment, which ultimately failed, was necessary to protect “the institution of marriage“…In 1998, while running for the Nevada’s senate seat against Harry Reid, Ensign called on President Clinton to resign in light of his admitted affair with former White House intern Monica Lewinsky

And the Republican Party is supposed to be the party supporting American values. What a failure. Their so called conservative spokes man has been married three times, and changed his faith. The former vie-president supports torture. A radio spokesman that will say anything to promote his program. They ran a free welding economic program that has lead to the greatest economic melt sown since the great depression. And they wonder why the party is shedding members left and right.
