(0 comments)I just saw Charlie Pierce do an interview on the Rachel Maddow show. He wrote a book called Idiot America: How Stupidity Became a Virtue in the Land of the Free.
One can guess at the book’s thesis.
I’m gonna pick myself up a copy tomorrow.

Not much to say about it, but it’s definitely worth 5 or so minutes of your time. (0 comments)Why Bipartisanship Is Impossible, In One Sentence

It’s amazing to me that Mitt Romney brings up France as a scary comparison point to himself so often when he spent years there and speaks the language. It’s such a minor point, but telling. Case in point. It’s amazing how all the famous/respected Catholic figures from the 1990s have turned out to be incredibly corrupt, isn’t it? I’m sure they’re somehow connected. That one is on my wish list too. This trend has to be reversed if the U.S. is going to have much of a future.
i have been trying to resist adopting too much of an outlook like my ex (we're doomed!) but it's getting harder every day
I just added that book to my Amazon shopping cart yesterday, too! It seems to have a similar focus as Susan Jacoby's Age of American Unreason, but I haven't read that one yet, either.
I'm always reminded of the premise for the movie Idiocracy. Lousy movie, but great opening premise. I think you can find the opening scene on Youtube.
Anyway… looking forward to reading this book, too. I agree with vjack. I don't want to have to move to another country.
one hopes the pendulum effect swings us far enough back away from the cliff's edge soon. i'm scared to think that obama might do some really huge fuckup (e.g., getting caught in bed with a dead hooker) which results in repubs getting back into power too soon, before they go through the time in the wilderness they'll need to become less insane. if this nut of republican insanity comes back into power too quickly, we are probably doomed. most of them still think global warming is a hoax! goodbye lower manhattan! :-/
At some point, it became cool to be ignorant and became dorky to know the answer. I won my 5th Grade school's spelling bee, entirely by accident.
It was actually a little embarrassing.
We need to go back to the old days when being dumb made you feel dumb, not cool.
For anyone who has ever taught or spent time in an American high school you would know that it's almost part of the American culture where "cool" equals stupid. We are SO screwed
I would love to read this book, but honestly I am almost afraid to. Each day I find it a little bit more difficult to function in our American Society. It really is known as "cool" to be stupid, it is completely 100% socially acceptable. Employees will work in unsafe conditions in order to "stay cool", and employers will waste lots of money on uneducated decisions, so long as it's "the cool thing to do". It's obvious that the stupids have been running our country for some time now and things are just starting to crumble. I saw the movie Idiocracy and thought it had a funny take on this issue. However, I am always shocked when I learn how much of that movie has already come true in this country. Maybe Mike Judge was abducted by aliens and given a chance to see the future. In this day and age… stranger things are happening.
