Amazing how some people have the silly notion that rightwing hate in this country might be something to worry about:
The Southern Baptist Convention, the nation’s largest denomination, has been embarrassed by the comments of the Rev. Wiley Drake, a former officer in the convention, who said he is praying for the death of the president.
Drake, a former SBC vice president who ran for president last year, said in a recent interview on Fox News Radio that he is praying an “imprecatory prayer” against the president. Those are prayers that ask for evil or misfortune. Asked if he was seriously praying that the president of the United States would die, Drake said, “If he does not turn to God and does not turn his life around, I am asking God to enforce imprecatory prayers that are throughout the Scripture that would cause him death, that’s correct.”
Americans United for the Separation of Church and State had this to say:
It was one thing (though still wrong) for Drake to lash out Americans United back in 2007. After all, he was angry that AU reported his church to the IRS for partisan electioneering. We alleged that Drake violated the law by using church resources to endorse Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee.
But it’s a completely different story to wish for the death of the president of the United States. It’s just plain evil, and it serves as another example of the fanatical thinking of some members of the Religious Right.

It’s amazing to me that Mitt Romney brings up France as a scary comparison point to himself so often when he spent years there and speaks the language. It’s such a minor point, but telling. Why am I not surprised?
The crazy thing is: what if something unfortunate does happen? Was it the will of God? Was God answering Drakes prayers?
We all know prayer works, right?
then at least we'll know he really is a vengeful god
Another example of a politician using a church to ram his ideas threw. Rev. Wiley Drake lost his religious high ground when he entered the political arena. This means that he is just another redneck ranting for the death of someone he hates. Like the “pro-life,” “anti-birth control” crowd he uses Christianity to cover his hate. And like Operation Rescue, is some psycho attempts to assassinate the president, he will claim that he did not mean it literally. It will be interesting to see if the Southern Baptist Convention censors him, as they should.
I would love to see white people villify this dude the way the they did to Rev. Wright
You just got your wish. This cretin should be thrown out of the SBC, though I doubt they will do more than say he wasn't speaking for us….when in fact he was. I grew up a Southern Baptist and what I see now is so far from the church I knew then…it totally disgusts me. The SBC has become nothing more than a right wing cult that tries to squash all dissenting views. It spews hate and bigotry at every opportunity. It is much closer to the likes of Timothy McVeigh than Jesus. I feel pity for the people that can't believe their faith has been hijacked by a group of radicals as bad as Osama bin Laden and still follow blindly or think this phase will pass and they will wait it out. If you think it will pass…look at bin Laden….that is the direction these power mad little men are pushing things. They are worthless trash…following them makes you trash like them….and murderers…when their ranting pushes the unbalanced to act on their hate filled speech and you have done nothing to prevent it.
All those Bible thumping morons should read the Bible more carefully. The Ten Commandments say to LOVE thy neighbor, not KILL thy neighbor. GOD did not mean for all of the different races and ethnicities to kill and banash all mankind from earth. All of these war happy God like religious fanatics
need to remember that they will be JUDGED at the PEARLY Gates and hopefully be banned to HELL by the rightous God they thought would stand behind all of their evil doings . Embrace each other and forgive for GOD is the one who will ultimatly Judge everybody.
God help us all with people like this among us.
The Fox Channel, Sean Hannity, and BEck and this crazy preacher Wiley Drake are driving people to commit crimes against our country.
I believe that Fox channel should be closed and people must stop watching this channel.
Benny, who then watches the watchers if we use you argument to close down Fox? The Bush/Cheney crew made enough moves in this direction with presidential decrees and law interpretations against free speech; do you really think that we should follow in their footsteps? Personally I only watch Fox local, because the local station does a good job, I never watch Fox national because of their biasness, I feel that it is not news, but low grade entertainment. Our society work because of the wide range of difference in opinions, the Republicans are suffering because they have shut down any differences in the policy discussions. Why should we follow suit? .
Replace "God" with "Allah", attribute the words to Ahmadinejad, and many conservatives will say you have a case for a nuclear first strike against Iran.
