Keith Olbermann on the possibility that Nancy Pelosi might have known something about the Bush torture regime:

When are Republicans going to realize that this is not first about party? It is about the traducing of our national character and the selling out of our principles in what was a phony, ineffective pretense of protecting those principles. If a Democrat is also culpable, then they can go to Hell too.*
Exactly right. I’ve never trusted Nancy Pelosi very much, yet I am also still skeptical about the dubious leaks being pumped out of the CIA right now about what Pelosi supposedly knew and when she knew it. If a full, fair and impartial investigation finds that she somehow committed some kind of arguable wrongdoing then, fine, throw the book at her too. But until then, let’s all push to have all the facts come out so we can make our own judgments without being played by strategic leakers at the CIA.

* P.S. Close your eyes and imagine someone on Faux News saying that about a Republican.

I was thinking along these lines recently and wondering why Democrats are more willing to criticize their own side. Then I realized that's not the case at all. Fox News and Republicans often adopt the same go-to-Hell mentality when a Republican is "guilty" of a principle-violation with the other side, e.g. voting for the stimulus.

The difference is that because those on the left and center often tend to agree with the defecting Republicans of late, we perceive other Republicans / Fox's criticism as unfair and ideologically purist.

But the situations are analogous: telling Pelosi or Reid or Joe Lieberman to go to hell is the same as telling Lindsey Graham or McConnell or a Republican Specter to go to hell. Happens all the time.

All part of politics. She had to know, but cannot admit to it.
