Sully highlights a great quote from Jonathan Chait:

Good ideas don’t always defeat bad ideas, but they usually, over time, defeat non-ideas.
Update: If you’re interested in marriage equality and how to express yourself logically, you really should read all of Chait’s article.

Here’s another gem:

Beauty pageant contestant Carrie Prejean, asked about gay marriage a few weeks ago, summed up her view this way: “In my country and in my family, I think that I believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman”… [This] anti-gay-marriage soundbite… makes no attempt at persuasion. It’s like saying you oppose the Bush tax cuts because “I believe the top tax rate should be 39.6 percent.” You believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman? Okay! But why?

  1. Jim Dittmer says:

Ms. Prejean (and others), I don't care what you believe. It doesn't bother me if your a homophobe, or a racist, or believe that anyone who's not your flavor of Christian is evil and going to hell. There is a place in life for all beliefs, even if that place is to serve as a negative example. I do care that you and others think that your take on "morality" trumps our Constitution; the right of all law abiding citizens to fair and equal treatment under that law. I see no reason why Heterosexuals, like you and I, should be afforded special rights. Perhaps the government should get out of the marriage business altogether?

    • Metavirus says:

well said. i have long been a defender of the rights of people to be as ignorant and intolerant as they want to be. the place where it starts to chap my hide is when these people attempt to hijack government in order to push their particular brand of ignorance (see, e.g. teaching creationism in schools)

  2. Schu says:

Thes are the people who push for a national religion and a national language. And they do it by intimination and hate.
