Courtney Martin highlights an interesting conclusion from a recent study of American religion:

It wasn’t divine intervention that ousted George W. Bush from office. It was millions of Americans — some Christians, some Jews, some Muslims, some confused — who wanted an ethical, not necessarily a religious, president. Pew reports that in 2008 Democrats and Barack Obama made significant gains among Hispanic Catholics, Hispanic Protestants, and other minority Catholics and Protestants. A majority of black Protestants, seculars, Hindus, Buddhists, Muslims, Jews, and Asian Christians also voted Democratic. A new day dawned in Washington — one where humility and a sort of quiet faith replaced the ego and fanaticism of yesteryear.

Americans didn’t just reject the politics of the religious right. They rejected the hubris and simplistic nature of strict religion. The “Faith in Flux” report declares: “About half … became unaffiliated, at least in part, because they think of religious people as hypocritical, judgmental or insincere. Large numbers also say they became unaffiliated because they think that religious organizations focus too much on rules and not enough on spirituality, or that religious leaders are too focused on money and power rather than truth and spirituality.”

The religious right, the people we love to hate. They call themselves Christians, but they try to take the Lord’s judgments in their name. As if the Lord has given his divine right of judgment to a mortal to dispense. A Christian try’s to live his life as an example to Jesus. If you examine the lives of the religious rights leaders, you will not find many examples of someone living his life like the Lords. Adultery, divorce, greed, money deals, fornicating with prostitutes, the list goes on and on. Yes we can find examples of these activities else where, but these are the people who are claiming that we should live our lives to a higher standard, a standard that they can not even come close to..

The pretend christian religionists have made God in their own image. The history of con men using religion is extensive and legendary. They offer no definition of God. Their congregations are fools whom the preachers insult and call foul names and then beg for money from the congregations of fools who give it to them. As George Carlin exclaimed, "God knows how to do and what every one thinks but God just can't handle money". God is always broke to the extent that god has legions of preachers with begging bowl spending millions and using public airways for free for beggery often leading to buggery. These legions of begging preachers are sinners. Drug/sex addict Ted Haggard, gluttonous Falwell, idolaters, and just plain criminals such as Robertson, just to name a few.
