A new poll out today demonstrates that hardcore American Christians are fine with torture:

More than half of people who attend services at least once a week — 54 percent – said the use of torture against suspected terrorists is “often” or “sometimes” justified. Only 42 percent of people who “seldom or never” go to services agreed, according the analysis released Wednesday by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life.
Here’s Poppa Sully:
So Christian devotion correlates with approval for absolute evil in America. And people wonder why atheism is gaining in this country. Notice the poll does not even use a euphemism like “coercive interrogation” – forcing Allahpundit to substitute it. (Even HotAir, it seems, finds it difficult to write the sentence: “Evangelicals are more likely to be conservative and conservatives are more likely to support torture.”) But it remains a fact that white evangelicals are the most pro-torture of any grouping. Mainline Protestant groups were the most opposed. A mere 20 percent of non-Hispanic Catholics believe that torture is never justified.
Just like Jesus said: “Torture them, my brothers, for only through pain inflicted on the weakest among us shall thou reach the kingdom of heaven.” Oh, that’s not real scripture? Maybe something like the following is more apt:
Exodus 22:21 Do not mistreat an alien or oppress him, for you were aliens in Egypt.

Deuteronomy 27:19 Cursed is the man who withholds justice from the alien, the fatherless or the widow.

Psalm 9:9
The Lord also will be a stronghold for the oppressed, A stronghold in times of trouble.

Psalm 74:21 Let not the oppressed return dishonored; Let the afflicted and needy praise Your name.

Psalm 146:9 The Lord protects the strangers; He supports the fatherless and the widow, But He thwarts the way of the wicked.

Isaiah 29:20
For the ruthless will come to an end and the scorner will be finished, Indeed all who are intent on doing evil will be cut off.

For the world shall know your hypocrisy, and in its image shall the depravity of your soul be laid bare.

I'm a mainline sort of protestant, and I abhor torture. We should never do it. I think most in my church would agree with me, though my brother in law brings up the "ticking time bomb" scenario, which is fairly easily dismissed. I have known some hardcore "evangelicals" which I suppose is a good euphemism for "fringe lunatics", and most of them have, to me, seemed particularly dense, and not surprisingly, intellectually incurious.

christians who support torture are, to me, the worst sort of "cafeteria christians" imaginable. it's one thing to claim to be a good christian while running around screaming about the evils of faggots and abortionists while porking your girlfriend before marriage. it's quite another thing to support the torture of your fellow man, while ignoring the question of "hmm, what might jesus say about that…"

Just because someone calls themselves Christian, does not mean that they are. We are judged by man, but by the Lord and by our actions.

I hope you realize that you are using the bible out of context. What is missing is that one of the main characteristics of God is LOVE. I know it’s hard to understand and that’s normal. God wouldn’t be God if we could put him in a box and understand Him completely. However, the bible is VERY clear that God is love and that he doesn’t enjoy hurting us even though it may seem like that sometimes. He is perfect in His judgement. Since we, as humans, have a corrupt view of judgement and what is fair it is hard for us to understand what is just and what is not. How great it is that GOD who is PERFECT decides what our judgement is. The good news is this: since He loves us he sent his son to save us. Unfortunately the only way to repay OUR sins was for Christ to die on the cross, defeating death, and raising 3 days later. If God didn’t LOVE us, he wouldn’t’ have died willingly on the cross just to be with us for eternity. Sadly enough, many Christians do many good things but they do it in vain because they do not LOVE. I hope that you, the author of this article, will learn that God is LOVE, not HATE and would never “torture the snot out of them” for mere pleasure. Thanks again, and God bless!

Sigh, here we go again! The article is about what so called Conservative Christians are saying about torturing people and how it is not what the Lord would do! It is a piece of satire about people calling themselves Christian, claiming that they follow the teachings of our Lord Jesus but claiming that we can torture them in the name of the Lord!

  2. Metavirus says:

Yea though I walk through the valley of torture, I will fear no evil: for King Bush art with me; Thy striking rod and Thy beating staff, they comfort me, for I know that the deeds of evil men were thwarted by Thy endless and wanton cruelty. In the name of the Stress Position, the Waterboard and the Sleep Deprivation, Amen.

  3. G Gordon Liddy says:

It all depends on the definition of torture. Waterboarding should not count as torture. I don't agree we should pull out people's fingernails, but I have no problem with a terrorist being waterboarded.

So I would have to refuse to answer, because it is a trick question. How about: "Do you consider the methods used to be torture? If so, do you still approve of these methods?"

And no laws were broken in any case, because it is FACT that these detainees do not qualify for the Geneva Convention. And they were cutting off our folks' heads before we did any waterboarding, so don't throw out the "waterboarding makes us less safe" argument. What DOES make us vastly more unsafe is for us to tell the world that we are evil. We make it sound like we are slowly burning people alive.

    • Metavirus says:

sigh. i fear for the future of our republic.

    • Joe Lang says:

Waterboarding has historically been treated as a crime in the United States, both when discussing war crimes and as general practice, and has handed down punishments for its use. A conservative whom I spoke to said that there was no correlation between how it was treated in times past and how it is treated now because times change. However, if that is true then there is no such thing as legal precedent.

Waterboarding is torture, it is illegal and it is wrong. At least the conservative I spoke to agreed with that, that it is, indeed, wrong.

    • Schu says:

What we have done, either by remaining silent, or agreeing to the process, is allow the terrorist to win. We have descended to their level, and adapted their tactics though panic, and as in so many areas in today’s world, we have abandoned our ethics. Any Christian who backs and agrees with these tactics has abandoned his faith, and the teachings of our Lord.

When you deal with the devil (assume for the time being he, she, it or they exist), you'll get what you ask for, but the devil will have undermined the spirit with the word.

"They're only unlawful Enemy Combatants, and we're only having coercive interrogations."

  5. sandra says:

NOP, jesus is the on;y one who loves me and loves you…..and i love him…you take half of the truth and not complete the sentences and concepts…you need help from a priest or someone who knows god closer and can show you how he does love you….love is feelings not a word to say, and if i didnt feel this love actually id be the first to leave jesus as humans cant just live on illusions and be satisfied!!!!!sorry for you!!

    • Mark Schumaker says:

The Lord is our Savor, and we are saved by his grace. The point of the argument is that not enough so called Christians act like Christians and sound more like barbaric pagans who want to torture confessions out of people like the which hunts of old did.

  6. Wayne says:

I only ask is for you to remove that picture. To some that picture will be used as blasphemy. My heart is sore just looking at it. Thanks

    • Schu says:

Sorry about that, but the picture accurately describes how many so called Christian are distorting the Lord and using his name in vain. While you may think that all people here are atheist it is simply not true. I like talking with people who use their brains well and do not peddle hatred. Our Lord and Savor never claimed that he hated anyone nor did any of his disciples preach hatred. That is the point. It is not our place to judge anyone but the Lords place. The picture needs to stay to make that point.
