Just awesome:

The approval rating of GOP leaders among Republicans has plummeted 12 points in a month, down from 55% in February to a minority of 43% now. That’s striking.

Not only that, but approval of GOP leaders overall has dropped to 28% overall — the lowest rating for GOP leaders in 12 years of Pew polling.

In fact, approval of Republican congressional leaders has fallen from 34% in February to 28% currently, the lowest rating for GOP leaders in nearly 14 years of Pew Research surveys.

Ha! Maybe they are smarter than I have given them credit for!

Awesome? Expected, I think, given how badly they've continued to implode.

But what do I know — I'm only the kind of independent the GOP needs to win back over if they ever want to have a functioning majority again. And there's no signs of that happening anytime soon … so I'd be pissed too if I were yet a Republican.

I guess maybe it's awesome if you don't want to see a return to sanity on the right. But fair-minded person that I am, I think that attitude is just as egregious as e.g. wishing for failure on the left, Limbaugh-style.

i would disagree with your second point. i think that revulsion for the current slate of republican leaders is KEY to revitalizing the republican party. i used to be a republican and believe that a strong opposition party, based on principles, is important to a healthy democracy. however, the republicanism of today has become unyielding orthodoxy — based on "Party First" rather than "Country First". the only way to resurrect the GOP is to systematically reimagine itself, similar to the long hard struggle of the tories in england (who now have a slew of gay and lesbian members in high political office — could you imagine the GOP of today countenancing THAT!?)

It's difficult to imagine, and I would agree that a sea change is needed in the party's leaders & policies…but for that to happen the republican base needs to change its attitudes too, and I haven't seen signs of that. They're just mad at their leaders for flailing about. I think that's normal and expected, not awesome.

IOW for it to actually be awesome would mean we're setting the bar far too low; I don't think this poll is a meaningful improvement. I doubt we'll see one until at least after 2010.
