A scientist responds to Creationists seeking a propaganda exercise debate:

Academic debate on controversial topics is fine, but those topics need to have a basis in reality. I would not invite a creationist to a debate on campus for the same reason that I would not invite an alchemist, a flat-earther, an astrologer, a psychic, or a Holocaust revisionist. These ideas have no scientific support, and that is why they have all been discarded by credible scholars. Creationism is in the same category.

  1. Dan Gilbert says:

The response he gave to the "challenger" was probably the best I've ever seen. It's definitely worth reading his entire response. The quote about alchemists, flat-earthers, and astrologers is the gem of his response, but there are other points that are extremely well said.

    Good stuff!

  2. DB says:

This response was so great that I posted it as well as a couple other blogs I frequent. Professor Gotelli is right on the money.

  3. Schu says:

My problem with Creationists is that they are trying to justify their faith. Either you believe or you do not. You cannot scientificaly prove Gos exsits, or prove that he does not exist. My proble with the evolutionary idea of the creation of the world, is that everything started by an accident. What we teach in school should be based in science, what we believe about who or what started it all should be taught at home.
